Why Magento stores lose search traffic
Out of the box, Magento leaves several search settings off. A store can look fine to customers while Google indexes thousands of near-identical pages: search results, sorted and filtered category pages, login and basket pages. Those crowd out your products, and the Page indexing report in Search Console fills up with "Crawled, not indexed".
What we check
- robots.txt: that it exists, doesn't block the whole site, your CSS, JavaScript or images, and lists your sitemap.
- XML sitemap: that it exists and is current, lists your live https:// addresses, includes images, and leaves out search, account and checkout pages.
- Pages from your sitemap: that they load, can be indexed, and have a canonical tag pointing to themselves.
- Magento's traps: search results pages, the customer login page, and sorted or filtered URLs without a canonical.
The settings that fix most stores
- Canonical tags: Stores > Configuration > Catalog > Catalog > Search Engine Optimization, set "Use Canonical Link Meta Tag" for categories and products to Yes.
- Sitemap: Marketing > SEO & Search > Site Map, then turn on daily generation under Stores > Configuration > Catalog > XML Sitemap.
- robots.txt: Content > Design > Configuration > Global > Search Engine Robots.
- Search pages: send a "noindex" header for /catalogsearch/ rather than blocking it, so Google can see the instruction.
After fixing, give Google two to four weeks. Judge it by clicks and impressions in Search Console rather than the number of indexed pages, which often falls as junk pages drop out.
